A dental filling is a restorative treatment for repairing minor fractures, tooth decay, or other surface damages. Filling materials, including composite, porcelain, and silver amalgam, help even the teeth surfaces in order to improve biting or chewing.
A dental inlay is a restorative treatment that usually appears like natural teeth and fixes teeth that cannot support a filling due to damage, but not to the extent that a crown is needed. It covers the surface for chewing in between cusps, while onlays restore fractured cusps.
Inlays and onlays are both meant to repair the chewing surface of a tooth, or, repair teeth via other restorations: the filling, which fills a tooth’s hole, and the crown, which covers most of the tooth. Dentists choose from materials like gold, tooth-colored composite resin, and porcelain to make an inlay based on your selection of aesthetic appeal, longevity, and price.
No matter what is recommended by the dentist, inlays generally are stronger than amalgam or composite fillings, lower in price than crowns, and most likely will not result in any complications in the procedure.
